Lessons.....

General

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the people who will carry out your driving test, has recommended a comprehensive syllabus that new drivers should be taught in order to bring them up to the required standard. I will teach this syllabus in a way that will suit each student’s ability. I will not teach shortcuts or tricks just to enable a quick test pass. It is my professional responsibility to produce safe, competent drivers.

Examples of topics to be covered can be found by clicking here.

The DSA’s own figures state that the average pupil requires around 47 lessons with a professional instructor in addition to a minimum of 20 hours private practice. While these figures are open to discussion they do, however, illustrate the high standard required to pass the current driving test. The most recent pass rate figures for Dundee Test Centre are as follows:

Year

Car

Bike

2006-2007

46.47

65.48

2007-2008

47.35

75.54

My car is available for students to take the test provided they reach what I consider to be test standard. On the day of your test, I will call for you, give you a fifty minute lesson just prior to the test and then allow you to use my car to take the actual test. Once the test is over, I will return you to your home or another previously arranged address. The total cost of this exercise shall be the cost of two lessons.

Pupils should expect the learning process to take several months, rather than weeks.

PLEASE NOTE THAT I DO NOT DO INTENSIVE (OR CRASH) COURSES. THEY ARE CALLED THIS FOR A REASON!!!

Basic Requirements

Before starting your training you should ensure that you have a valid provisional or full driving licence.

You should also ensure that you can easily read, either with or without glasses, a normal number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres. This is the minimum legal requirement and you will not be allowed to drive if you do not meet these conditions. Pupils who fail to meet this requirement will still be charged the full lesson cost.

Lessons shall last for one hour, unless alternative arrangements have been agreed, and will be on a one-to-one basis (no car-sharing) from a pre-agreed pickup point. If you want dropped off at a different destination please tell me at the beginning of the lesson so we can fit it in. However, be aware that I reserve the right to deduct any unreasonable traveling time required if the student changes their normal drop off and would result in my being late for my next lesson.

.Lessons shall be conducted very much at your pace as I like to focus on confidence building from the early lessons. This leads to a better learning environment for the student and results in a more consistent learning curve. The idea being that if you are relaxed and are enjoying the lesson you are far more likely to remember what you have been taught. So don't expect to be thrown on to the Kingsway, or to have all of the manoeuvres thrown at you, in the first few lessons. I find this approach to the lessons as far more beneficial, particularly with the more nervous student.

Any money due must be paid before, or at the start of,the lesson or test on the day, unless prior arrangements have been made.To save your time please try to have money (no cheques unless accompanied by a valid cheque guarantee card) available for the lesson. Visits to banks / cash machines will be made during the lesson and not after.

So that I can offer you lessons at the best possible price, I would appreciate your assistance in keeping your appointments. If you are unable to do so, please give as much notice of cancellation as possible. Cancellations not received 24 hours prior to the appointment must be paid for. Students who habitually cancel will not be forward booked unless they pay in advance especially at times which are always in demand, for example, evenings or weekends.

Please make sure all your personal possessions are removed from the car at the end of the lesson. Anything left behind will be returned to you as soon as is practicable but no responsibility will be accepted for loss or damage to same.

Pupils should ensure that they are fit for their lesson. Any pupil thought to be unfit for their lesson, whether through the effects of drugs, alcohol or even just “sleeping in” will have their lesson cancelled immediately but will still be required to pay the full lesson fee.

One Hour Lesson Versus 50 Minute Lesson

If you are shopping around you will find many instructors who give 50 minute lessons only and these may seem, on the face of it, a cheaper option. However, over a period of time this slight difference will have an effect on how much value for money you are getting:

300 minutes = 5 x 60 Minute Lessons 5 x £23 = £115

300 minutes = 6 x 50 Minute Lessons 6 x £22 = £132

N.B. Cancellation of Pre-Paid Block Bookings once arranged will result in a 25% administration fee on the remaining balance only.
